Susan Allen Ortega
Assistant Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs and Dean of Students

Susan came to UC Riverside in 2000 and is in her sixth year as a Highlander . She serves as a member of the senior management team for the Division of Student Affairs and provides direction and support to a family of departments and resource centers which share the goal of facilitating and enhancing the intellectual, personal, social and ethical success and development of students and enhancing campus life.

Susan brings over twenty years of experience as a student affairs professional. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Hartford, her master’s degree in counseling from Southern Connecticut State University, and her doctorate in higher/post secondary education administration from Syracuse University.

Jen Miller
Student Development Educator

Jen joined the Dean of Students/Student Life staff in July of 2005 as the Student Development Educator. Previously, she worked for two years as a Resident Director at UC, Riverside. Jen grew up in Buffalo, New York. She attended Oberlin College, OH, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology. IT was her undergraduate experiences of being a Resident Advisor, working as an Athletic Trainer, and being involved in various student organizations that sparked her interest in working in Student Affairs. Sher went on to earn a Master's of Arts in Higher Education Administration from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. While at the University of Michigan, Jen worked as a Resident Director and a Research Assistant for the Women in Science and ENgineering program (WISE).

Major responsibilities: Advisor for R.E.A.C.H. (Reaching for Education, Affirmation, Community and Harmony), a peer education program addressing hazing, hate bias related crimes/incidents, sexual violation/violence, and academic integrity; Assist with campus activities (i.e. Block Party, first year experience course facilitation, and Orientation); Design and initiate pro active and reactive administrative initiatives addressing hate bias related crimes/incidents, hazing, suicide awareness, academic integrity, and sexual violence/violation; Supervise Community Service and NUFP interns; Serve as a liaison to the cultural, programming, and support services offices and student organizations housed in the Dean of Students office, and other related campus offices (i.e.: housing, RPD).                                                                                        


Carmen Rivera

Management Services Officer


Carmen  accepted the position of Management Services Officer with the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students organizational unit in July 2006.  Carmen earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1998 from UC Riverside from the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Science, with a major was in Sociology, an emphasis in Administrative Studies and a minor in Spanish.  She began her career at UCR in March 1999, working as the Assistant to the Registrar and AVC for Enrollment Management. In 2002, Carmen was offered the opportunity to serve as the Administrative Specialist for the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA), and shortly after was promoted to Administrative Analyst within the VCSA Office.
