"Take Back the Night:"Sexual Violation/Violence Education

Sexual Assault ( www.wrc.ucr.edu ): Sexual assault is a general term used to describe many forms of sexual offences. Any unwanted sexual contact or sexual attention committed by force, fear, duress, menace, trick or violence is sexual assault. It includes rape, attempted rape, spousal rape, oral copulation, sodomy, sexual battery, and insertion of a foreign object (ie:fingers).

 UCR “Take Back the Night” 2008

Thursday, April 17th, 2008, at 6pm at the Bell Tower

“Take Back the Night” is a nationally recognized program occurring on college campuses and high schools throughout the month of April. The unifying theme is the assertion that all human beings have the right to be free from violence, the right to be heard, and the right to reclaim those rights if they are violated.


The unifying theme of the nationally recognized "Take Back the Night" events are that all human beings have the right to be free from sexual violence, the right to be heard, and the right to reclaim those rights if they are violated. We thank those community members who added their voices to "breaking the silence" on April 17th.


UCR 2007 Events Included: "Denim Day" fashion show, "Walk in Her Shoes" event, spoken word performance, speak-out, rally, candlelight vigil, march against sexual violence, refreshments, information tables, and so much more!


You (or a team) can get involved with TBTN 2008 in the Following Ways:

1) Selling Food at the Event (food permits required, table must be reserved by Friday, March 28th, 2008, contact: Jen Miller 2-5000, Jennifer.miller@ucr.edu).

2) Signing up a team of participants for the Denim Day Fashion Show and/or Walk in Her Shoes Activity (Team Members must sign up by Friday, March 28th, 2008 with Jen (see info above) and attend one of the “What is Walk in Her Shoes/Denim Day?” meetings scheduled for Tuesday, April 1st, noon, Commons 367 and Tuesday, April 1st, 6pm, Commons 367.

3) Volunteering on the TBTN Event Team . TBTN Event Team members must sign up by Friday, March 28th, 2008 with Jen (see info above) and attend one of the “Volunteer Orientations” scheduled for Thursday, April 3rd, at noon, Commons 367 and Thursday, April 3rd, at 6pm, Commons 268.

4) Participating in the Open Mic . Please sign up and submit a brief description of what you will be performing by Friday, March 28th, 2008 with Jen (see info above). Previous open mic performances have included poetry, spoken word performances, storytelling, dance and musical performances, etc.

5) Hosting a Take Back the Night Informational Booth . Please sign up and submit a brief description of what will be at your booth by Friday, March 28th, 2008 with Jen (see info above). Previous informational booths have included related philanthropy projects, cards for survivors of sexual violence, clothing collection, sexual violence brochure tables, etc.
