Incidents Reported to the HBRT During the 2007-2008 School Year

*Note: This summary report contains every complaint made by a reporting party without passing judgment on the nature of the incident or whether it conforms to the definition of hate or bias.

10/1-10/5 2007 - A staff member reported on behalf of a Falkirk resident that while the resident was studying at Starbucks, a person drove by and yelled a slur(the reporting party stated that the voice was recognizable as a fellow Falkirk resident). The resident self-identified as a member of the LGBT community.

10/12/2007 - A staff member reported two men posing as preachers outside the Belltower who were sharing their non-supportive opinions regarding the LGBT community.

11/6/2007 - A student reported sexually explicit and racist graffiti was posted on the student’s door in an off campus apartment complex.
Documentation only was requested
The incident was reported to UCRPD, Women’s Resource Center and the Title IX office by the student
The incident had been reported to Housing for emergency housing purposes

11/13/2007 - A Resident Director reported sexually explicit and racist language that had been written on a condom ad posted on a Resident Advisors door.

The incident had been reported to Housing by the staff member

11/26/2007 and 11/29/2007 - A staff member received two sexually explicit e-mails from a student via a student web-mail account stating the student’s opposition to UCR’s recognition of world AIDS day.

The incident had been reported to SCAIP by the staff member

1/7/2008 - A staff member reported two non-UCR affiliated individuals outside of Costo Hall who were sharing their views on religion and the LGBT community in a public way.
Documentation only was requested

1/24/2008 - A housing student reported a threatening remark made on face book by a roommate stating, “Their might be a KKK beat down.”
Documentation only was requested. Housing followed up with the AVC/Dean of Students office when the student stated that “the HBRT never responded to their report.” An AVC/Dean of Students staff member contacted the reporting party who expressed that no further action was needed regarding this incident

3/31/2008 - A student reported that a ceremonial Mezuzzah symbol that was on the Hillel office door was missing.
HBRT follow-up requested.
An AVC/Dean of Students staff member met with the reporting party to discuss options. The reporting party stated that they would notify the HBRT if further action was requested from the Hillel students

4/1/2008 - A staff member reported an altercation between two residence hall students in a Pentland Hills residence hall lounge where the terms, “Faggot” and “Dirty Jew” were referenced.

4/2/20008 - A Housing staff member reported that a resident overheard a neighbor walking past his door and stating, “_____’s is a Faggot.”

4/2/8/2008 - A staff member reported that a student was at the bell tower with a visible disability was followed and mocked via imitation. The student was in tears by the time that she made it to Services for Students with Disabilities office.

4/10/2008 - A staff member reported that a TAPS sign for the LGBTRC sponsored Drag ball was stolen. Posters advertising drag ball were also reported removed on 4/10/08 and 4/11/08.

4/15/2008 - A staff member reported that while she was in Lot 24, a male’s voice yelled from the track field, “A beautiful girl like you shouldn’t be walking alone late at night. There are people like me out there.”

The incident was reported to UCRPD and SCAIP

4/17/2008 - A staff member reported that a student shared with them that a few members of their student organization had posted some hate-related information on their social networking pages. The student organization expressed the wish to handle it as an internal matter.

5/13/2008 - Multiple HBRT members and the UCRPD responded to reports of 2 “Hate Speakers” outside of the bell tower.
The incident was Documented and “How to approach hate speakers” pamphlets were distributed

5/15/2008 - A student approached a member of the HBRT to discuss perceived racist articles in the Highlander. HBRT members worked with the student to conduct a perception survey and to write an editorial response to the articles of concern.

5/27/08 to 5/30/08 - Multiple HBRT members and the UCRPD responded to 4 daily non-UCR affiliated visitors at the bell tower stating homophobic, sexist, and anti-Catholic, Muslim, Jewish sentiments. Allegations of assault and sexual harassment were investigated by the police on 5/27/08.
The incident was Documented and “How to approach hate speakers” pamphlets were distributed

6/4/2008 - A student reported receiving a text message from a student that she was working on a project with stating, “I’m making the Negro do it,” that appeared to be intended for her fellow classmates. The reporting student is the only African American Woman in her class.
